When we elect a new superintendent, especially someone with a proven track record like Dr. Michael LaSusa from Chatham, we owe it to our community to give him the opportunity to assess and refine how our district operates. As the CEO of our school district, Dr. LaSusa brings both leadership and a reputation for fiscal responsibility.
During his tenure in Chatham, referendums were rare and thoughtfully designed. In 2016, voters approved a $24.8 million referendum focused on critical upgrades, including full-day kindergarten, security improvements, and necessary renovations. Just recently, in November 2023, Chatham proposed two modest ballot measures totaling $1.7 million—one for security vestibules and another for paraprofessional health benefits. Both passed with strong community support, resulting in a minimal 1.23% annual increase.
Compare this to Princeton’s recent referendum history: three referendums since 2018 totaling over $57 million, with another $90 million proposal now on the table. If this passes, Princeton’s spending per student will far exceed most other districts in the state, even as rankings continue to decline.
Why Not Give LaSusa a Chance?
Dr. LaSusa’s history of prudent financial management and targeted solutions proves he’s capable of identifying operational efficiencies while maintaining excellence in education. Why rush into another massive referendum now? Let’s give him the time to evaluate our district’s needs and develop a plan that is both focused and fiscally responsible.
A Smarter Path Forward
Instead of approving yet another massive referendum, let’s vote NO on January 28 and allow Dr. LaSusa to bring fresh eyes to our district’s challenges. By doing so, we can encourage a more thoughtful approach that prioritizes transparency, operational efficiency, and better outcomes for all stakeholders—students, parents, and taxpayers alike.
